Nutritional deficiencies and toxins are making us dumb. It’s no secret that American school children don’t measure well when compared with international peers, and our adults don’t do well either. A global test found that US adults are dumber than the average human, scoring below the international average. There are twenty-two countries, including China, Japan and Mongolia, with higher average IQ levels than the United States. Given the increasingly sophisticated skills required for global competitiveness and economic strength, this does not bode well for the future of the United States.
It’s time to make America smart again! First, let’s stop making ourselves dumber. About 70 percent of the US population drinks fluoridated water. In fact, more people in the US drink fluoridated water than the rest of the world combined. Even though the National Institutes of Health has concluded that children who live in areas with highly fluoridated water have “significantly lower” IQ scores than those who live in low fluoride areas, this insanity continues. We must stop putting fluoride in our tap water.
Beyond the fluoride in our tap water, toothpaste, beverages, and food products, add the enormous assault of other neurotoxic chemicals and you have a recipe for dumbness. The Environmental Protection Agency published a list of chemicals, known as developmental neurotoxins, that have been shown to cause learning disabilities. Most of these chemicals are in foods, beverages, and products used daily. These toxins include:
- Aluminum used in vaccines, sunscreens, antacids, and deodorants.
- Aspartame used as an artificial sweetener in diet sodas and numerous other products.
- DEET used in insect repellents.
- Bisphenol A in plastic containers, liners of food cans, and cash register receipts.
It gets worse when you add the thousands of chemical additives in our processed foods, such as artificial food colors, flavors, preservatives, and processing aids. You can be certain these thousands of chemicals interacting in your body are not beneficial for your brain. Fifteen million pounds of food dyes are used in the United States every year. This is five times the amount used fifty years ago. Artificial colors have been shown to increase “inattentiveness, impulsivity, and hyperactivity among young children.”
Then there are toxic drugs. Long-term marijuana use harms intelligence, memory, and attention span. Prescription drugs, such as cholesterol-lowering statins, can cause memory loss, forgetfulness, and confusion.
So, what is the solution? First become aware of the toxins you are exposed to and avoid them as much as possible. Get the processed foods out of your life; they are loaded with toxins.
